What Is An FD Calculator?
An FD Calculator is an online banking tool designed to calculate the maturity amount and interest earned on a Fixed Deposit account over a specific duration. It takes into account your principal investment, interest rate, tenure, compounding schedule, and applicable senior citizen rate enhancements.
Fixed Deposits remain one of India's favorite risk-free savings avenues because they provide capital protection guaranteed under DICGC insurance (up to Rs 5 Lakhs per bank) and predictable cash flows.
How Fixed Deposit Interest Is Compounded
In Indian commercial banks, cumulative FD interest is compounded quarterly using the compound interest equation:
A = P × (1 + r / (n × 100))(n × t)
Where:
- A = Total Maturity Proceeds
- P = Principal Deposit Amount
- r = Annual Interest Rate (in %)
- n = Compounding frequency per year (Quarterly = 4, Monthly = 12, Half-Yearly = 2, Annually = 1)
- t = Total tenure in years (Years + Months / 12)
Senior Citizen Fixed Deposit Advantages
Indian banks offer senior citizens (individuals aged 60 years and above) an extra 0.50% interest rate over the regular rate. In addition, under Section 80TTB of the Income Tax Act, senior citizens enjoy a tax deduction of up to Rs 50,000 per financial year on interest income from bank fixed deposits and post office schemes.
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on Bank FD Interest
Under Section 194A of the Income Tax Act:
- TDS is deducted at 10% if interest income exceeds Rs 40,000 per financial year for regular individuals (Rs 50,000 for senior citizens).
- If your total taxable income is below the basic exemption limit, you can submit Form 15G (or Form 15H for senior citizens) to avoid TDS deductions.
